Facts About Columbariums
Whether you are choosing traditional or direct cremation in Yukon, OK, you may want to keep the loved one’s remains in an urn at your home after the process is completed. Others may choose a scattering ceremony or even burial, but there’s also an additional option called a columbarium that can be utilized. These structures are just one more way to house a loved one after the process so keep reading for more information.
Columbarium History and Facts
These structures were first noted in the Roman Empire and were all standard options for individuals. The design was based on the dovecotes used to house different kinds of birds. As the tradition grew in popularity, they were also found in Asia and are used by the Buddhist faith, with the main difference being the design reflecting that of a temple or ornate resting space.
These structures are generally found in cemeteries as freestanding buildings, but they can also be
placed in facilities of worship or spiritual centers and be a room or a wall. The design will have individual spaces built into them called niches, and these are compartments meant to house one urn. However, there are exceptions to this that can be purchased that can hold two urns or multiples if many family members want to be laid to rest together.
The structures will come with a front made of granite, bronze, or glass. Granite is the safest option because it can be sealed, but it’s more challenging to personalize it. The bronze is more pliable, and it could replace a traditional headstone meaning you can engrave it with information about the individual. Glass is one of the most popular options because it allows you to display contents inside the niche for anyone coming to visit or look at the columbarium.
There are many reasons that individuals use this choice, including:
- – It may be too painful to have the loved ones remains at home
- – The household could be a busy one, and they may not want to risk the ashes being spilled
- – The columbarium is less maintenance than other options
- – It can be a cheaper choice compared to traditional burial
What Will a Columbarium Space Cost?
The cost of the columbarium starts at around $700 and can’t go up into the thousands based on a few different external factors, including:
- – The day of the week the remains are placed inside the niche
- – The location of the columbarium (higher population areas may be more expensive)
- – Any fees for the cemetery
- – Additional adornments or variations and sizes of niche
