Richard "Rick" Joseph Hamill, 48, of Oklahoma City, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2026, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Rick was born on January 17, 1978, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Richard and Gail Hamill. The family eventually made its way to Oklahoma, where Rick graduated from Westmoore High School in 1996.
Movies were Rick's first great love, especially the horror and action films of the '80s and '90s. He had a soft spot for John Hughes, but above all he loved anything by John Carpenter. Watching Halloween every October was practically a Hamill family tradition. Rick also took it upon himself to give his siblings a proper film education. That is how an eight-year-old Brent came to watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre alone. Don’t worry, it didn’t scare him too bad because he also grew up to love horror movies, and he has Rick to thank for that. For a good stretch he worked at the old Almonte movie theater, which, by all accounts, means he saw just about every film released in that era. He spent the rest of his life building a movie collection to match.
For more than ten years, Rick worked at Penn Square as the manager for PacSun. He was an extremely hard worker, but he never let the work get in the way of making sure everyone was having a good time. Coworkers say a shift with Rick always made the day better, and that people simply gravitated toward him. One called him a great leader; another said he was, and still is, someone he looks up to. Everyone's mood improved after talking to Rick. It was practically a law of nature.
Rick was also, as one friend put it, a true fashion inspiration. No matter the weather, he showed up in the coolest clothes anyone had ever seen, often a vintage find, and no matter how the trends changed, he stayed true to himself. He had great taste in music, a sharp eye behind a camera, and a deep appreciation for beauty in all its forms: in art, in nature, and in people. Some might even call him a purveyor of beauty.
And then there were his different characters, or as Summer would call them, his different personalities. Rick had a whole cast of characters he could slip into at a moment's notice, but Ricky Lee was the fan favorite. If you were ever fortunate enough to meet Ricky Lee, you know. But beneath all the jokes was a goofy soul with the kindest heart. Rick was selfless to the core and would put anyone and everyone ahead of himself. His life was a lesson to everyone who knew him: no matter how much the world changes around you, always be yourself and stand up for what you know is right.
Rick met the love of his life, Summer Lutz, while they were both working at PacSun. What sealed it was a shared love of true crime mysteries and all things horror. In fact, there is no doubt that the first thing Rick will do in heaven, other than run into his mother’s arms, is find out who killed JonBenét Ramsey and Elizabeth Short, aka the Black Dahlia. When they traveled, other couples might have looked for a beach. Rick and Summer looked for the Museum of Death in New Orleans and the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, the hotel that inspired The Shining. For them, it was about having an adventure and making memories.
In 2023, Rick and Summer took a big step and bought a mid-century modern home together. They threw themselves into DIY projects and made room for each other's passions: a space for Rick's photography and movie collections, and a space for Summer's sewing and all things crafty. They grew a healthy vegetable garden, split the mortgage, the bills, and every chore that comes with owning a house, and did all of it side by side. Then when Rick was diagnosed with cancer, Summer stayed by his side every day keeping him company and making sure he was well taken care of. For nine years they were a team, and they stayed a team to the very end.
Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Gail Hamill. He is survived by his partner of nine years, Summer Lutz; his father, Richard Hamill Sr.; his brothers, Brent and Patrick Hamill; his sister, Emily and the one he loved more than anyone else, his cat Wendy. Not to mention the countless friends and coworkers who will be telling Rick stories for years.
Services: It would only be fitting for Rick’s memorial service to be on Friday, November 13, 2026.
In lieu of flowers: Summer set aside her career to care for Rick full time. As she returns to work, she will be carrying the mortgage and household bills on her own. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a gift to Summer's GoFundMe: GoFundMe Link
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Integris Hospice House for the compassion and dignity they gave Rick in his final days, and to the doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals.
Arrangements are by Corbett Funeral Home. Condolences and memories may be shared below.
If you want to honor Rick, put on a cool vintage find, watch a John Carpenter movie, and remember to not take life too seriously.
