Matthew Sean McLean

     Matthew Sean McLean, 53, a resident of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, passed away on May 13, 2026. He was born on December 28, 1972 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to his parents Joe Howard McLean, Sr. and Naomi Ann Hammond McLean.

     Matt is a graduate of Tara High School in Baton Rouge in 1990. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond in 1996. He also attended Louisiana State University, where he proudly walked on to the LSU Tiger Band as first-chair bass trombone. He later earned his Master of Music from Southeastern Louisiana University in Bass Trombone Performance in 1999 and then a Doctor of Musical Arts (ABD) from the University of Oklahoma in Bass Trombone Performance. He was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Symphonia music fraternity and the Sigma Pi social fraternity.

     Music was Matt’s lifelong passion and calling. A gifted and talented bass trombonist, he devoted much of his life to music and music education, sharing his talent and love of music with others. Throughout the years, he performed with many musical organizations, including the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Lawton Philharmonic, Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, Oklahoma Metropolitan Orchestra, Oklahoma Chamber Symphony, and Oklahoma Community Orchestra. He also shared his love of music through his work and teaching at Oklahoma City Community College, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma State University and Cameron University. He performed with Kristin Chenoweth, The Electric Light Orchestra, Nancy Wilson and Ray Charles. His creativity, dedication, and appreciation for the arts touched many lives over the years.

     Professionally, Matt most recently served as the User Support Specialist Lead for Immunization Services at the Oklahoma State Department of Health. He was known for his humor, enthusiasm, and willingness to help others.

     Above all else, Matt loved his children dearly and treasured the time he spent with them.

     Matt was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his three sons, Edan Padraig McLean, Duncan Laughlin McLean, and Cael Ronan McLean, all of Fletcher, OK; his brother, Joe Howard McLean, Jr. (Karan) of Jacksonville, AR; his sister, Liese Ann McLean Edwards (Scott) of Belton, TX; and his devoted partner of 16 years, Hugh W. Doherty, of Oklahoma City.

     He is also survived by his nephew, Joe Howard McLean, III (Lauren) of Austin, TX; nieces Kristen McLean Vestal (Stephen) of Jacksonville, AR, Lauren Edwards Fournier (Scott) of Belton, TX, and Sarah Edwards Winkler (David) of Austin, TX; great-nieces Kaleigh Ann Brocato and Lily Anne McLean; and great-nephews Henry William Fournier and Hammond Scott Fournier.

A memorial service will be held at Corbett Funeral and Cremation, 807 W Wilshire Boulevard, Oklahoma City, OK on Friday, May 22, 2026 at 2 pm.
