John R. Baker, III

May 26, 1952 — June 24, 2025

Edmond

John Baker was born on May 26, 1952, in Oklahoma City to John R. Baker, Jr. and Teresa Baker, both of whom preceded him in death. A lifelong resident of the Oklahoma City area, John most recently made his home in Edmond.

He is survived by his brother, Mark, and Mark’s wife, Judy; as well as his cousins Greg Dixon, Bart Dixon, Sherill Baker Ritter, Rex Baker, Elizabeth McCord, Susan Dee Cox, and Gray Dixon McCord.

John attended Catholic schools in Oklahoma City and graduated from Bishop McGuinness High School. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Oklahoma and, following in the footsteps of both his parents, received his Juris Doctor from the University of Oklahoma College of Law. He worked as a lawyer and landman for GHK Petroleum and also spent several years in private practice in Oklahoma City.

An “old soul,” John had a deep love for genealogy and history. He knew the Baker and Dixon family histories by heart and was especially captivated by the story of the Oklahoma Land Run and his ancestors’ role in it—stories he delighted in sharing with others. He also had a lifelong appreciation for cars, and was particularly enamored with the red Subaru he purchased shortly before his passing.

John’s dogs, “Rufus Doodle” and later “Lacey,” were his constant companions, especially during his declining health. They could do no wrong in his eyes and were rarely far from his side, or his chair.

For the past twenty years, John lived in far north Edmond, where he built close friendships with many neighbors, including Carl and Lesley and their extended family, and Todd, Debbie, and Andi. John’s kindness and friendship will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
