LaVern is a Christian now living with our Lord Jesus in heaven. Gary "LaVern" Stephens, 70, passed quietly at 1:45 AM Friday, February 9, 2024, at O.U. Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, under comfort care with his sister, Cindy, present. LaVern was born in Norman, Oklahoma, on November 5, 1953, to E.B. "Bailey" and Darlene Stephens.
LaVern lived in the Oklahoma City area his entire life and is a Del City High School and Rose State College graduate. He earned an X-ray technology associate's degree and worked at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City, Shawnee, and Lawton Hospitals. Through his Father's bloodline, LaVern is a Tribal Citizen of the Chickasaw Nation.
LaVern was a state champion wrestler and was active in a local group of wrestlers of all ages. He kept up with Oklahoma wrestling and enjoyed watching football with his friends. Automobile racing of all kinds was another passion. LaVern Also loved dogs, collecting knives, country music, two-stepping, and motorcycle riding. He was a shade-tree mechanic with an infectious sense of humor; his most notable characteristic was that he loved to make people laugh.
LaVern is preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Michael Eugene "Bones" Stephens.
LaVern was not married and had no children. He is survived by his younger sister, Lucinda "Cindy" (Stephens) Vogelweid, her daughter Christine Bischoff, both of Jacksonville, Florida, and older brother Mike's daughter, Tania Cox, of Wichita, Kansas, her husband Luke, and many nieces and nephews.
We will share memories at 10 AM on Friday, February 16, 2024, at Corbett Funeral Home Chapel, 807 W. Wiltshire Blvd., Oklahoma City, OK. His final resting place is Fairview Cemetary, along with many other family members in Tuttle, Oklahoma. Graveside service for family only.
LaVern's favorite charity is Wounded Warriors, and the family requests donations to that charity instead of flowers.
Deuteronomy 31:8: "The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."
